Day 29

Watermelon Crawl

We had a nice send off from the Marshalltown boys, including donuts. We had an escort to the edge of town. Thank you brothers.
What a treat today, only 68 miles. I took it easy and road the hills in a very low gear. I am going to really have to take it easy on the knees. After crawling up the hills we stopped at a fruit stand for fresh watermelon…mmmm good.
We received a very warm welcome from Cedar Rapids Fire. They are in a temporary house. It’s an old beer warehouse. It looks like a government alien holding facility inside. Their old station flooded with 10 feet of water.
Since we rolled into town early, I used my spare time to get a haircut and a shave. Then I went to Walgreen’s and purchased Joint Juice, Glucosamine, Advil, an Ace bandage, and a bag of ice.
We are having dinner with Rescue 1, Engine 5 and Station 10. They put out quite a spread, chicken, ribs, potato salad, macaroni salad, beans and corn bread muffins. Now that’s a fire dept meal. Thanks men.
We were talking about where we were during 9-11. We talked about the men from FDNY we met with. It brought back a lot of memories. That was a terrible time. The bar was set by the greatest Fire Dept in the world FDNY. Thank you for your service.

  1. More proud of you than words can express… Really difficult to find the words. I tried… and I can’t! Thanks for the inspiration. I really believe that most have “forgotten”. Thanks for helping many to “remember”: Be safe and I hope you start feeling better! I NEED you to roll into New York for me :). Thanks buddy and keep it up. You can do it!

  2. Yay for a hair cut. I was going to tell you on my last post you look like you needed a hair cut!! Ha ha..

Hope the knees are holding up. The glucosamine might not kick in until you have taken it for a couple of days. But the advil should work in the meantime.

    Good luck,
    Tracy

  3. The ‘stash’ looks great. Really proud of you. You are a great inspiration for me and I know for the rest of us in the fire service. Take care of those knees. Praying for those knees of yours. Have your ride partner lead for a while

  4. Hi honey. Think about getting some Aspercream and messaging your knees. I’m praying that you will be all right. I love you more than you can ever realize. mom

  5. With the media inundating the masses with propaganda as the ten year anniversary of 9-11 creeps closer, your blog serves as a pleasant reminder that truth and goodness can prevail over a “for profit attitude.” No pressure, but clearly, your trek as taken on a grander scale in the scheme of things. I am pleased to track your progress and pull for your success, rather than then watch cable channel marathon coverage of jaded opinions. You matter. You inspire. You can make it.
